Born in Rhode Island, Isaac Dennison Kenyon (1831-1864) was working as a clerk and postmaster in Voluntown, Connecticut at the outset of the war. He enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in the 21st Connecticut Infantry in August, 1862 and married Carrie J. Freeman on September 9th prior to mustering in to Company G. Kenyon distinguished himself at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December and was promoted to Captain of Company B in June of 1863. He led Company B in the Battles of Drewry’s Bluff and Cold Harbor, as well as during the Siege of Petersburg where he was mortally wounded on August 18th. He died at a Base Hospital in Point of Rocks, Virginia on September 1st and was buried in the Kenyon family lot in Richmond, Rhode Island.
