A native of Chatham, Connecticut, Frederick W.H. Buell (1839-1865) worked as a clerk in his hometown when the Civil War began. He enlisted as a 1st Sergeant in Company H, 21st Connecticut on August 12, 1862. Two weeks later, Buell married Caroline Brown, sister of 1st Lieutenant Delos D. Brown, also of Company H. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in March, 1864 in New Bern, North Carolina. He died suddenly of malaria at Chaffin’s Farm, Virginia on January 5, 1865 and was buried at Lakeview Cemetery in East Hampton, Connecticut. His epitaph reads:
A dutiful son, an affectionate husband, a brave soldier, a noble man. A consistent Christian. Life’s fitful fever ended, he sleeps well
