Following the fall of New Orleans to Union forces in September, 1862, General Benjamin F. Butler organized the new First Louisiana Native Guard, including some men from the original militia unit. Butler said of the regiment, “Better soldiers never shouldered a musket.” The regiment was featured in this issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper from the Lincoln Shrine’s newspaper collection and later became the 73rd Regiment Infantry U.S. Colored Troops.
