Note from Abraham Lincoln dated June 13, 1864 written in response to a letter from Missouri legislators Senator John B. Henderson, Brigadier General Benjamin F. Loan, Colonel Joseph W. McClurg, Henry T. Blow, and Congressman Sempronius H. Boyd.
Written from Washington City on June 13, the letter requests the appointment of John Barker to the rank of Major and Paymaster of the volunteer services of the United States. Barker is described as “of most excellent character, of good morals and in every way qualified to discharge the duties” of the office to which they recommended him.
Lincoln approved the request on the reverse, writing, “Let this appointment be made so soon as it conveniently can be.”
